The Flying Husker’s started November by closing out October with a win led by Husker Alum Lt Col Phillip Varilek who, with his crew from the 79th Rescue Squadron, kicked off the Husker win over Purdue with an HC-130J flyover.
The following day Lt Col Varilek and crew provided 28 ROTC students an opportunity to fly onboard the aircraft prior to departing for their follow-on training. The 28 students learned about the many roles and missions of the HC-130. They witnessed firsthand the intricacies of each crew position and how they coordinate to get the job done. The students learned from the pilots, the combat systems officer, and the loadmasters. For many of them, it was their first time in a military aircraft.
Cadets Anderson & Stevens described the experience with joy. They expressed their amazement, being able to fly over their state and watch the Platte River unwind behind them. It was the perfect scenery to close out a great weekend. Detachment 465 thanks the 79th Rescue Squadron and Lt Col Varilek for providing them with this fantastic opportunity. Go Big Red!
